Cerro Tusa stands as the most iconic, mesmerizing geological symbol of the Antioquia region. This sharp mountain mass is globally recognized as the highest natural pyramid in the world, towering at an altitude of 1,850 meters (6,070 feet) above sea level.

Beyond its striking symmetric geometry, the mountain is surrounded by pre-Columbian mysteries. The most famous is a massive geological rock profile on one of its sheer faces that naturally forms the shape of a woman's silhouette. Ancestral communities named this formation The Goddess of the Mirror (La Diosa del Espejo) 🪞, due to the intense silver flashes produced when midday sun rays refract off the quartz-rich rock faces.

Deep within the forest flanks at the base of Cerro Tusa lies the ancient Altar of Sacrificios. This sacred archaeological site was utilized by the pre-Hispanic Zenufanáes tribe to carry out ritual offerings and spiritual tributes dedicated to their mountain deities.

GUIDED TOUR SPECIFICATIONS 🧳

Expedition permit fees for Cerro Tusa adapt depending on your final group size. If you schedule your trek on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), you can join one of our standard shared group departures. If you choose to climb during weekdays, the cost will be calculated on a private basis depending on the exact number of hikers in your party.

The vehicle accommodates up to 3 passengers. For instance, if you are traveling with two friends, your individual fraction will be a mere $6.000 COP per way ($6,000 x 3 = $18,000 COP).

HOW TO GET TO CERRO TUSA FROM MEDELLÍN 🚌

The first logistical goal is to reach the colonial town of Venecia (Antioquia). Below is a detailed breakdown of how to navigate this journey using public transit from Medellín, which acts as the closest international travel hub.

-> PUBLIC BUS ROUTE FROM MEDELLÍN TO VENECIA

Head to the Terminal del Sur (Southern Bus Terminal) in Medellín. Locate the ticket windows for the transit company Transportes Fredonia.

⚠️ Critical Logistical Warning: When purchasing your ticket at the counter, you must explicitly state that your final destination is Venecia. The exact same company operates separate routes to the neighboring town of Fredonia via completely different mountain highways.

Buses operate daily starting at 6:00 a.m., departing every hour until 6:00 p.m. The overland mountain journey takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on morning transit. One-way tickets cost $17,000 COP.

Expert Field Tip: We strongly urge you to catch the 6:00 a.m. bus. This guarantees you access the trail during the coolest hours of the morning, granting you sufficient time to conquer the intense vertical climb without rushing.

Following a scenic 1.5-hour drive, you will arrive at the main square of Venecia (Antioquia). The moment you step off the bus, the colossal, razor-sharp pyramid shape of Cerro Tusa dominates the entire mountain horizon. Facing its verticality is both thrilling and deeply intimidating, but that immediate respect for the peak is exactly what drives you forward.

After a quick walk around town, we met with our assigned local mountain guide and boarded our designated veredal moto-taxi. Because we filled all 3 passenger slots, we paid our corresponding fraction of $6,000 COP. Upon arriving at the raw base of the mountain, we synchronized with the rest of our trekking group arriving on private dual-sport motorcycles and 4x4 vehicles.

We paused briefly at the Altar of Sacrificios archaeological site to listen to the ancestral history shared by our guide. Right after the safety briefing, we fastened our technical packs and entered the dense brush to initiate the ascent of Cerro Tusa.

THE TECHNICAL 3-PART VERTICAL CLIMB 🧗‍♂️

⚠️ Technical Difficulty Notice: This specific mountain route holds a strict Class 5 difficulty rating on a scale of 1 to 5. It demands intense physical stamina and features severe exposure to heights. If you lack solid trekking experience or suffer from vertigo, we strongly advise against this trail, as the extreme verticality will result in a dangerous and stressful experience.

The total distance from the trailhead to the summit of Cerro Tusa is approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles). The absolute challenge lies in the fact that 1 full kilometer (0.6 miles) of this trail is a pure, unmitigated vertical wall featuring a relentless incline of up to 70 degrees—requiring constant three-point contact and upper-body hand traction, essentially border-lining free rock scrambling.

-> THE CLIMB CONSISTS OF 3 DISTINCT MOUNTAIN STAGES:

  • Stage 1 (The Open Pastures): The trail initiates by crossing rolling, private cattle-grazing land. You must cross through multiple working wooden cattle gates (broches). It is a strict unwritten mountain rule to leave every single gate securely closed behind you! In this zone, it is exceptionally easy to lose the trail because there is no physical path etched into the deep grass. Past the pastures, you hit a steep, clay-heavy incline heavily exposed to the sun, where the dirt is slick and losing footing is common.
  • Stage 2 (The Dense Cloud Forest): Entering this segment offers a massive psychological relief, as the thick canopy of native trees completely blocks the exhausting sun. The terrain here is completely vertical, but the mountain floor is rich with hyper-stable exposed tree roots and sturdy branches that act as heavy, secure natural ladder rungs you can grab onto to pull yourself up 🧗‍♂️.
  • Stage 3 (The Exposed Scree Ridge): You break past the tree line to exit onto the final, razor-thin summit arista. The cloud canopy disappears, exposing your body to intense heat, and the terrain changes into loose, highly volatile volcanic scree and unstable boulders. You must watch every single hand and foot placement with extreme focus.

🚨 CRITICAL BACKCOUNTRY ROCK SAFETY PROTOCOL: If you accidentally dislodge a rock or boulder while climbing up or descending, you are legally and morally obligated to scream out the warning word "ROCK!" (¡PIEDRA!) at the top of your lungs to immediately alert the climbing teams ascending directly beneath you.

It is a common rumor among local hikers that descending Cerro Tusa is significantly harder than climbing it. Based on our field evaluation, the cardiovascular load on your lungs is lower, but the continuous impact on your knees and quadriceps is brutal. You must descend slowly and deliberately, stepping down backward (facing the rock wall) on the 70-degree sections, and never hesitate to request assistance or a spotting hand from your guide.
