FAST FACTS ABOUT LAKE OTÚN 🧑🏫
Lake Otún is a massive natural volcanic reservoir located in the department of Risaralda, high within Los Nevados National Natural Park. The Lake Otún basin stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in length and reaches depths of around 70 meters (230 feet).
The lake was formed through intense volcanic and glacial activity, fed directly by the melting ice of the Nevado de Santa Isabel glacier. Historically, Lake Otún was deeply revered as a sacred site by the ancient indigenous Quimbaya civilization. Today, it holds vital ecological importance as the primary source of the Otún River, which supplies drinking water to the entire city of Pereira.
HOW TO GET TO LAKE OTÚN 🛻
There are two primary overland routes to reach the lake:
- El Cedral Trail (Pereira): Extremely demanding. It requires a 2-day wilderness backpack trek covering 19 km (11.8 miles) of steep incline, climbing from 1,900 m (6,233 ft) up to 4,200 m (13,779 ft) above sea level.
- 4x4 Off-Road Route (Highly Recommended): The most time-efficient option. It is operated using local 4x4 Jeep vehicles. The drive takes roughly 4 hours from Pereira to the park entrance, followed by a moderate approach hike.
Note: Since the mountain dirt roads are highly complex and unpaved, we strongly advise against driving yourself. Always hire experienced local drivers who dominate high-altitude backcountry terrain.
-> THE 4x4 EXPEDITION FROM PEREIRA TO LAKE OTÚN
Our journey started at 4:00 a.m. in the city of Pereira, where our pre-booked 4x4 mountain transport picked us up. After waiting a few minutes for the rest of our trekking group to assemble, we began the steep overland drive toward the park boundaries.
As we gained altitude, the dirt roads became increasingly rugged. On several unpaved stretches 🛤️, we had to hop out of the vehicle briefly so the Jeep could safely cross sections of deep mud. We even crossed paths with local motorcyclists who needed our group's help to push their bikes out of severe mud traps.
After a grueling 4-hour drive from Pereira, we finally arrived at the main high-altitude gate of Lake Otún.
Once there, we enjoyed a traditional breakfast and immediately attended the mandatory environmental briefing led by certified park rangers, learning how to minimize our impact on this fragile paramo ecosystem. Afterward, we initiated a 5 km (3.1 miles) approach hike accompanied by our certified mountain guide and environmental interpreter.
Note: Please be aware that there is absolutely no public transportation running to this remote sector of the park, and the dirt road can deteriorate severely during the rainy season. Booking a formal tour with professional local mountain drivers is highly recommended.
-> NATIONAL PARK ENTRY FEES & PERMITS (2026) 🎟️

- Mandatory Mountain Medical & Rescue Insurance ⛑️: National Park regulations state that every single hiker must possess specialized daily rescue insurance, which costs approximately $7,500 COP per day. If you plan to camp overnight, you must buy coverage matching your total duration prior to your trip.
⚠️ Strict Age Restrictions: To protect vulnerable individuals from extreme high-altitude conditions, entry is strictly prohibited for children under 5 years old and adults over 70 years old.

THE LAKE OTÚN TREKKING TRAIL BREAKDOWN 🚶♂️
Below is a detailed breakdown of the high-altitude route we mapped out. The first section covers the trail from the park entrance up to the Potosí Mirador (the maximum turnaround point for single-day tours). Following that, we detail the deeper backcountry trails for multi-day backpackers.
-> LA ASOMADERA / POTOSÍ VIEWPOINT (DAY-TOUR TURNAROUND)
Following the unpaved 4x4 drive, you arrive at a remote mountain homestead known as Hostal Campo Alegre, resting at 3,850 meters (12,631 feet) above sea level. Here, we ate a light breakfast while observing the unique paramo landscape right outside our window.
Immediately after breakfast, as noted earlier, we underwent the mandatory induction talk focusing on the extreme fragility of the paramo wetlands and local conservation rules.
Next, we hit the trail heading toward La Asomadera Viewpoint (Mirador de Potosí). The trek involves a steady 2 to 3-hour walk through vast, mystical valleys filled with thousands of giant frailejones. The landscapes are absolutely out of this world.
Upon reaching the summit of the Potosí Mirador, several hikers in our group experienced sudden dizziness and mild headaches. This is completely normal since La Asomadera stands at roughly 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level. If you want to prepare properly, make sure to read our dedicated medical advice post: [ What is Altitude Sickness & How to Avoid it? ]
VIEW OF LAKE OTÚN FROM LA ASOMADERA VIEWPOINT
Note: This stunning ridge viewpoint is the ultimate destination and final stop if you are only booking a single-day tour.
Descending slightly past the Potosí ridge trail, you enter the deeper sectors detailed below.
-> THE GIANT FRAILEJON FOREST
From the Potosí Mirador ridge, it takes roughly 1 hour of steady hiking to descend into this spectacular alpine valley, where you can photograph the deep blue waters of Lake Otún framed perfectly by towering frailejon rosette plants.
-> RANGER HOUSE & WILDERNESS CAMPING ZONE
Continuing past the frailejon forest, we hiked for an additional 3 hours along an open backcountry trail. Be warned: certain stretches of this trail lack proper physical signage, making it exceptionally easy to lose your bearings if fog rolls in.
Along the way, we crossed paths with an active geothermal area known as La Azufrera (The Sulfur Vent), famous for emitting hot volcanic steam directly from cracks in the rocks. Local mountain lore tells a tragic story of two lost hikers who found this warm area years ago; unaware of the dangers, they pitched their tent directly over the vents to escape the freezing cold and sadly passed away overnight due to inhaling toxic volcanic gases ♨️.
After navigating past the sulfur vents, steep ridges, and smaller tarns, we finally arrived at the shores of Lake Otún.
Camping Guidelines: If you choose to backpack and camp here, you must be 100% self-sufficient. You need a high-quality 4-season tent, a sub-zero sleeping bag, and a portable camping stove. Open campfires are strictly illegal within National Park grounds. Nighttime temperatures routinely plunge to 0°C (32°F) or below.
-> THE LAGOON OF SILENCE (LAGUNA DEL SILENCIO)
The following morning, we woke up early to trek toward a smaller, hidden lake known as "Laguna del Silencio". The trail offers pristine alpine views backed by the dramatic, jagged silhouette of the Paramillo de Santa Rosa volcano 🗻. Reaching this hidden lake requires a 2-hour hike from the main Lake Otún basecamp.
True to its name, this hidden lake offers unparalleled peace, solitude, and silence 🧘♂️.

🗓️ FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VISITING LAKE OTÚN
- ⚠️ High-altitude driving skills required: The dirt roads leading up to the park are unpaved and severely degraded. Ensure your driver possesses extensive experience handling 4x4 vehicles in rocky, muddy mountain terrains.
- 🚫 Health & safety exclusions: Park authorities deny entry to anyone under 5 or over 70 years old, pregnant women, or individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular or severe respiratory conditions.
- 🐾 Leave no trace: Pets (dogs and cats) are strictly prohibited inside the National Park to protect native wildlife. Recreational fishing is also illegal.
- 💧 Hydrate constantly: Drink small, frequent sips of water throughout the entire trail to keep your blood oxygenated and combat acute mountain sickness (AMS).
- ⛺ Bring a heavy-duty waterproof tent: Paramo weather is notoriously volatile; intense rainstorms and heavy alpine winds can develop within minutes.
- 🎒 Pack appropriate technical layers: High-altitude wetlands feature bone-chilling temperatures. Bring waterproof pants, a windproof shell jacket, and an insulated base layer.
