FAST FACTS & HISTORY OF LOS FRAILES 🧑🏫
Los Frailes Waterfall is a colossal vertical column of water plunging 70 meters (230 feet) into a natural pool, fed directly by the pristine high-altitude aquifers and glacial runoffs of the Paramillo de Santa Rosa volcano. Geographically, this entire water canyon has been closely protected under strict environmental conservation zoning by the municipal water company (Aguas y Aguas de Pereira) since 2017.
Regarding its nomenclature, regional elders state that the absolute etymological origin remains heavily debated. However, the most widely documented historical theory states that during the colonial era, Franciscan friars (Frailes) used to track deep into this dense Andean cloud forest to execute hidden spiritual retreats, fasts, and baptisms directly beneath the powerful spray of the falls.
HOW TO GET TO LOS FRAILES WATERFALL 🚍
The waterfall rests hidden inside the rural sector known as Vereda La Suiza, sitting approximately 18 kilometers (11.1 miles) outside the urban perimeter of Pereira. Be explicitly warned that public transportation options serving this mountain valley are highly limited and operate strictly on a sparse daily schedule. Here are your primary transit alternatives:
1. OVERLAND "CHIVA" BUS (TRADITIONAL CAMPERO) FROM PEREIRA TO LA SUIZA
You can board a traditional open-sided wooden Chiva bus directly in front of the Victoria Shopping Mall (located on Calle 17 in downtown Pereira). The regional transit line is operated by Transportes La Florida. Scheduled departure times are highly specific:
- Monday through Friday: Single daily departure at 9:00 a.m.
- Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays: Early morning departure at 7:00 a.m.
The Chiva will drop you off on the unpaved main rural road (view our interactive GPS map below). From the drop-off point, you must complete a moderate 500-meter (0.3 miles) walk to reach the official ranger station.
2. REGULAR URBAN BUS FROM PEREIRA TO LA FLORIDA VILLAGE
Standard municipal buses depart roughly every hour, also from the bus bays positioned in front of the Victoria Shopping Mall (Calle 17). Note that this urban route terminates early at the village of La Florida. From there, you would have to hike for approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) along an unpaved road just to reach the trail check-in point. Because of this extreme distance, experienced independent hikers universally use this option only for their return journey—walking downhill after the tour to catch the highly frequent urban buses back to Pereira.
3. PRIVATE TRANSIT (MOTORCYCLE OR CAR) DIRECTLY TO THE GATES
If you are traveling on your own motorcycle or rental car, note that the road corridor linking La Florida village to the ranger station (a 6 km stretch) is entirely unpaved gravel and dirt. Choosing a private vehicle means you bypass all preliminary approach walks, as you can drive directly to the Buenos Aires farmstead (the official meeting point) and utilize their secure parking lot.
TECHNICAL TRAIL & GPS ROUTE BREAKDOWN 🚶♂️
The guided eco-trek kicks off formally at the main house of the Buenos Aires farmstead. This property features an enclosed parking area where car and motorcycle owners can park their vehicles completely free of charge during the activity. The trail spans a total round-trip distance of 3.4 kilometers, taking an average of 3 hours of slow, educational interpretive walking to complete.
-> VERIFIED GPS TRACK DETAILS
Below is our verified GPS trail track highlighting key biological interest stations and precise altitud profiles:
- Total Circuit Distance: 3.42 Kilometers (2.1 miles) round-trip.
- Minimum Elevation Profile: 1,860 meters (6,102 feet) above sea level.
- Maximum Elevation Reached: 1,936 meters (6,351 feet) above sea level.
If you arrive via the urban bus line, the driver will drop you off exactly at the bus icon marked on our map; the preliminary pedestrian route you must walk to reach the trailhead is highlighted in bright orange.
Return Journey Hack: Securing public Chiva slots directly from La Suiza back to town after midday can be highly unpredictable. If you are fit and enjoy walking, a fantastic alternative is to execute a 6.5 km downhill trek along the scenic canyon road to La Florida village, where urban buses back to Pereira operate with very high frequencies.
Throughout the trek, you will traverse a dense, primary cloud forest completely free from urban noise pollution. Because this canyon sits inside restricted corporate water conservation reserves, there are no commercial highways or developments to disturb the pure natural acoustics.

If your group walks in absolute silence and displays excellent luck, you can spot wild troops of howler monkeys, spectacled bears, and the highly endangered Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax), a beautiful avian species entirely endemic and heavily protected within this coffee region sanctuary.

⚠️ Severe Trail Safety Warning: Throughout the trek, you will cross several pedestrian footbridges engineered out of raw local hardwood. We strongly urge you to cross with extreme care; due to the perpetual 90% humidity of the cloud forest, the wood surfaces become incredibly slick. Multiple independent hikers lacking high-traction footwear have suffered severe, high-impact slips here.
Upon clearing the final river canyon turn, you will be rewarded with an unparalleled, towering frontal view of the full 70-meter waterfall payload.

🗓️ FINAL SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS & PACKING CHECKLIST
- 🧥 Pack a technical waterproof shell jacket: The sheer kinetic force of a 70-meter drop hitting the rock basin creates a permanent, wind-driven icy brisade. Standing anywhere near the base will soak regular clothes in seconds, risking rapid hypothermia.
- 🩱 Bring a technical swimsuit: Highly necessary if your body holds the thermal resilience required to swim inside the freezing, hyper-energizing plunge pool at the foot of the falls.
- 🥾 Wear aggressive high-traction footwear: Only use specialized trail-running shoes or hiking boots featuring deep lugs to prevent hazardous slips on the moss-covered boulders and wet timber footbridges.
- 🏃♂️ Pack rapid-wicking synthetic layers (Spandex / Liners): Completely ban heavy denim jeans or heavy cotton fabrics from your pack. Lightweight, stretchable synthetic blends will make your tracking infinitely more flexible and lightweight.
- 🌞🦟 UPF protection & bug defense: Wear long-sleeve technical hoodies with built-in UV blocks to easily deflect heavy sun radiation under canopy clearings and ward off insect bites.
