🗓️ FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VISITING NEVADO DEL COCUY
-
🎟️ Book your spot well in advance: Every trail has a strict daily visitor capacity limit. We have sadly seen travelers arrive at the park gates at 5:00 a.m. without a booking, only to be turned away. In those cases, they had to wait until 8:00 a.m. for the National Park offices to open to try to get a last-minute slot, wasting precious mountain daylight and risking missing out entirely if the day was fully booked.
-
🥾 The importance of a certified guide: The Sierra is an open book on geology, high-altitude ecosystems, and ancestral indigenous culture. As a community, we want you to truly connect with this land. While many local farmers are currently in training, booking through formal agencies like Randes or our certified partners guarantees guides who excel in technical group management. This ensures that if any unexpected weather event occurs, you won't be left with an unprepared backup guide.
-
🛡️ Look for backing and safety guarantees: Traveling to the high Andes involves serious logistics and occasional unforeseen events. We always recommend booking with teams that offer transparent guarantees regarding transportation, mountain medical insurance, and emergency protocols. At the end of the day, our goal at this blog is for you to enjoy the mountains without logistical worries.
-
🗣️ Mandatory Park Briefing: Do not forget that entering the El Cocuy National Natural Park strictly requires attending a mandatory environmental induction briefing beforehand. If you skip this mandatory step, park rangers will deny your entry, so make sure to coordinate this on Day 1 with your guiding team.
-
❄️ Prepare for extreme mountain weather: Conditions in the Sierra can change drastically in a matter of minutes; you can go from intense alpine sun to heavy rain, freezing winds, and sub-zero temperatures. For your comfort and safety, it is mandatory to bring the following personal layering system and gear:
- 🧥 Insulated cold-weather jacket (thermal) and a waterproof hard shell jacket.
- 🥾 Sturdy hiking boots with proper grip or non-slip soles.
- 🧤 Warm beanie, thermal gloves, and sunglasses with UV filter.
- ☀️ Sunscreen (essential due to high UV radiation at high altitude).
- 🌧️ Waterproof poncho or windbreaker.
- 🧦 A fresh change of clothes (extra t-shirt and dry socks).
- 🩲 Swimwear (to relax in the local hot springs!).
- 📣 A safety whistle.
